MemoPryl Side Effects: 7 Safety Checks Before Your First Capsule

Quick answer

MemoPryl side effects are not reported in any study of the product, so the picture comes from its named ingredients. Mild effects such as stomach upset, headache, dizziness, poor sleep and sun sensitivity are possible. The bigger risk is interactions with prescription drugs, led by St. John's wort. Run the seven checks below, and ask a pharmacist before the first capsule if you take any prescription.

Key facts

Key facts: how safe is MemoPryl to take?

  • No trial of MemoPryl itself exists. Side effects here come from single-ingredient sources.
  • Many effects in those sources appeared at study doses. MemoPryl's amounts are not public, so each effect is possible, not certain.
  • St. John's wort is the biggest issue. It can weaken many prescription drugs (NCCIH, St. John's wort).
  • Ginkgo and phosphatidylserine carry bleeding cautions. Acetyl-L-carnitine carries a seizure caution.
  • Huperzine A, listed only by the eBay seller, may slow the heart and acts like prescription dementia drugs (ADDF, Huperzine A).
  • Use is limited to adults 18 and over. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are reasons to skip it.

Check 1

Check 1: Which side effects are linked to each MemoPryl ingredient?

These are reported effects for each ingredient on its own, not for the MemoPryl formula. The last two ingredients come from the eBay seller's list.

Reported side effects by ingredient, from the linked sources
IngredientReported effectsSource
PhosphatidylserineMay lower blood pressure, raise body weight and raise bleeding risk(ADDF, Phosphatidylserine)
Bacopa (brahmi)Nausea, stomach cramps(ADDF, Bacopa)
Ginkgo biloba leafHeadache, dizziness and stomach upset; extra bleeding risk if you take warfarin(NCCIH, Ginkgo)
Acetyl-L-carnitineAt about 3 g a day: nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea and a fishy smell; seizures in people who have a seizure disorder(NIH ODS, Carnitine)
St. John's wortDiarrhea, dizziness, poor sleep, restlessness, tingling skin; sun sensitivity at large doses(NCCIH, St. John's wort)
L-glutamineSwelling, headache, fever, nausea; rare reports of liver injury(MSKCC, Glutamine)
Alpha-GPC (seller list)Heartburn, headache, insomnia, dizziness, confusion(ADDF, Alpha-GPC)
Huperzine A (seller list)Headache, dizziness, blurred vision, upset stomach; may lower heart rate(ADDF, Huperzine A)

Because eight ingredients share one capsule, you may not be able to tell which one caused a symptom. A daily log helps.

Check 2

Check 2: Do any of your medicines interact with MemoPryl?

This is the check that matters most. NCCIH says St. John's wort can interact with many medicines in dangerous, sometimes life-threatening ways (NCCIH, St. John's wort).

Medicine groups to bring to your pharmacist, with the ingredient behind each
MedicineIngredientWhat may happen
Birth control pillsSt. John's wortThe pill works less well
Some antidepressantsSt. John's wortSerotonin side effects
WarfarinSt. John's wort; ginkgoWeaker effect; added bleeding risk

Valproic acid and other anticonvulsantsAcetyl-L-carnitineThese drugs lower carnitine levels
Blood pressure medicinePhosphatidylserineIt may lower blood pressure too

This is not a full list. Keep taking your prescribed medicine, and never stop or change a dose on your own to make room for a supplement.

Check 3

Check 3: Is bleeding a concern for you?

Possibly, through two ingredients. Ginkgo raises bleeding risk with warfarin (NCCIH, Ginkgo). Phosphatidylserine may raise bleeding risk on its own (ADDF, Phosphatidylserine).

Tell your surgeon or dentist about MemoPryl before any procedure and ask when to pause it. Watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds or bleeding gums, and call your doctor if you see them.

Check 4

Check 4: Do you have epilepsy or a seizure disorder?

Ask your neurologist first. NIH reports seizures in people who already have a seizure disorder and take carnitine (NIH ODS, Carnitine). Huperzine A may worsen some forms of epilepsy (ADDF, Huperzine A).

St. John's wort adds a third angle: it can weaken seizure drugs such as phenytoin and carbamazepine (NCCIH, St. John's wort). A weakened seizure medicine can be dangerous. Do not stop yours.

Check 5

Check 5: Is your heart rate a concern?

Huperzine A might lower heart rate (ADDF, Huperzine A). Only the eBay seller lists it, and nobody has said which label version holds it, so treat it as present.

If you have a slow pulse, faint easily, or take a medicine that slows the heart, ask your doctor first. Get care at once if you feel faint or your pulse seems unusually slow.

Name mix-ups matter here. MemoPryl is not metoprolol, a prescription beta blocker with a similar sound. When you speak to a doctor or pharmacist, spell the name and show the bottle.

Check 6

Check 6: Are you ready for sun, sleep and stomach effects?

These are the mild effects most likely to show up. Cover up and use sunscreen outdoors, because St. John's wort can make skin react to sunlight at large doses (NCCIH, St. John's wort). MemoPryl's amount is not public, so go carefully until you know how your skin responds.

Poor sleep is listed for both St. John's wort and alpha-GPC. Nausea or stomach upset is listed for bacopa, ginkgo, acetyl-L-carnitine and L-glutamine. If any of these lasts more than a few days, stop and ask a pharmacist.

Check 7

Check 7: When do you stop, call your doctor or call 911?

  1. Stop and call your doctor

Unusual bleeding or bruising, a slow or skipping pulse, a rash or bad sunburn after short sun, or a medicine that seems weaker.

  2. Tell your pharmacist

Stomach upset, headache or poor sleep that does not settle after a few days.

  3. Call 911

Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, numbness or weakness on one side, trouble seeing or walking, or a sudden severe headache. These can be stroke signs (CDC, Stroke signs).

To report a reaction, tell your doctor first, then file a report with the FDA MedWatch program. Include the product name, the label version, the lot code, the start date and what else you take. Keep the bottle.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does MemoPryl cause headaches?

It can. Headache is reported for ginkgo, L-glutamine, alpha-GPC and huperzine A on their own (NCCIH, Ginkgo) (MSKCC, Glutamine) (ADDF, Alpha-GPC) (ADDF, Huperzine A). No study of MemoPryl measured it. A sudden, severe headache is an emergency, so call 911.

Can MemoPryl cause trouble sleeping?

Possibly. Poor sleep and restlessness are listed for St. John's wort, and insomnia for alpha-GPC (NCCIH, St. John's wort) (ADDF, Alpha-GPC). If your nights get worse after day one, tell your pharmacist and think about stopping.

Is MemoPryl safe with blood thinners such as warfarin?

Yes, in two ways. St. John's wort can weaken warfarin, and ginkgo adds bleeding risk with it (NCCIH, St. John's wort) (NCCIH, Ginkgo). Anyone on a blood thinner should not start MemoPryl without the prescriber's approval.

Can MemoPryl slow your heart rate?

Maybe. Huperzine A, which only the eBay seller lists, might lower heart rate (ADDF, Huperzine A). Anyone with a slow pulse, or on a medicine that slows the heart, should ask a doctor before starting.

Can the St. John's wort in MemoPryl make skin sun sensitive?

At large doses, yes (NCCIH, St. John's wort). The amount in MemoPryl is not public, so cover up and wear sunscreen until you see how your skin reacts. A rash or burn after little sun means stop.

What should I do if I think MemoPryl caused a reaction?

Call your doctor, then file a report with FDA MedWatch. Add the lot code, the label version and a short account of what happened. For a return on an eBay order, use your eBay account. For an order desk purchase, call +1 (302) 200-3480.

Bottom line

Our view

The safety story for MemoPryl is mostly about what it can do to your other medicines. The capsule effects, such as stomach upset or poor sleep, are usually mild in the sources and easy to track.

What we cannot tell you is how often any of it happens. No trial of the formula exists, and the amounts are not public. That is why we ask for a pharmacist check first, then a short daily log, then an honest decision inside the 30-day return window.

If you take any prescription, skip the order until a pharmacist has seen the bottle. If a symptom worries you, call your doctor. Do not wait for a website to settle it.

Plain status

MemoPryl is a dietary supplement. It is not FDA approved, and no supplement is. It is not a treatment for memory loss, dementia or any disease. It contains St. John's wort, which can weaken many medicines. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start, and keep taking any prescribed medicine.
